Culture rules

If leaders are the DNA of your organization, culture is the genetic coding. Culture governs what is viewed as acceptable behavior in an organization and what is not. Culture comprises the underlying shared values of an organization, which are manifested in the day-to-day norms and behaviors of its members.

While many sophisticated models can be used to understand and influence culture, we believe it can be described simply.

Culture is nothing more than learned behavior.
Changing a culture, therefore, requires learning new behaviors.

It’s a simple description, but in action, culture change is far from straight-forward. Old habits, as the saying goes, die hard. Organizations suffering from a state of inertia will be heavily influenced by stagnation. And for learning to happen, your teams must be in a frame of mind which allows ideas and a different way of being to permeate and percolate.

Learning also requires those who are willing and able to teach.

In working with clients on Culture Change, we start with those best positioned to teach—members of the senior leadership team. Although Culture Change can be achieved in many ways, the most effective and sustainable changes are top-down, driven by the organization’s leaders. Leaders by definition are naturally positioned to teach, through their words and through their actions.

A Culture Change engagement starts first with a conversation among our consultants and the senior leadership team. The purpose is to establish a clear overall business context for the change:

  • Review the company’s strategic plan (vision, mission and strategic objectives) to ensure the plan is current and complete.
  • Ensure the leadership team is fully aligned on the business direction and priorities.
  • Define the day-to-day behaviors that will be required throughout the company to achieve the plan.
  • Translate the required behaviors to a set of core organizational values.
  • Define the required culture based on the organizational values.
  • Assess the current culture vis-à-vis the required culture.
  • Develop strategies and plans to move the culture from where it is to where it needs to be, starting first with the senior team and then cascading throughout the organization.
