Beware the disengaged employee

It’s trite but true: change is the only constant. And the pace of change continues to accelerate, fueled by technology advancement, real-time access to market conditions, disruptive innovations, new competitors and a host of other dynamics. In response—and oftentimes in a desperate attempt to just keep up—businesses have instituted a variety of change management programs to help their organizations cope with the growing tide of variables.

At the same time, employees in the U.S. and around the globe are highly disengaged at work. Employee engagement research results in recent years consistently show that only a third of U.S. workers are engaged in their work. Why is full engagement important? Engaged employees are highly involved, enthusiastic and committed to their work and their organizations, which leads to higher productivity, greater profitability and better customer relationships.

By contrast, disengaged employees—two-thirds of the U.S. workforce—do the minimum required, and present little extra effort to go out of their way for their co-workers or your customers. Disengaged employees are less dedicated, less vigilant and much more likely to leave for other opportunities. In short, they are a drag on a business trying to succeed in the face of continuous and accelerating change.

The right toolkit for change

At Catalytics, we shift the focus from managing change to equipping organizations with the capacity and capabilities to succeed in the face of change. In working with clients on change issues, we:

  • Make important distinctions between the change (an event) and transition (a process) and equip them with the knowledge and tools to accelerate through the transition.
  • Establish organizational agility and resilience as required core competencies to successfully navigate change and transition, and build these capabilities through strategy sessions, skill building workshops and individual coaching and advising.
  • Help organizations assess and understand what drives employee engagement and develop strategies and initiatives to improve employee engagement.
